All students come to the classroom with various levels of social-emotional development. With differing life experiences, not all students can be expected to be at the same stages of development. While some students will be highly sociable and emotionally stable, other students might be more timid and/or unable to control their emotions. Special care must be extended to students struggling with social-emotional development issues.
In order to build a positive learning environment for all students, teachers must be intentional to form strong relationships with students. Building these relationships can help the students develop both socially and emotionally.
In addition, social and emotional learning and character development can be explicitly taught as shown in the video below. By explicitly teaching these concepts, students will be better equipped to develop the necessary social and emotional skills needed to succeed.
